THE METAMORPHOSIS

"The Metamorphosis" was the best story from Kafka for me, which is interesting because from the start of the story I expected it to be another creepy story from Kafka. The story turned out to be the total opposite for me.  I'm sure many of us were able to relate to Gregor's story. It's kinda strange  how this story was written many years ago, and people today are going through the same issues with their own families. I do believe everyone gets used in life at some point, it not necessarily a bad thing. People use you because they need you most of the time, however there are times when people take advantage of you. I knew something was wrong with Gregor,  he was just a little to comfortable with his transformation into a bug. Most people would have freaked out, he was more concerned about how  everyone else would be affected by the transformation.  Gregor's family took advantage of him. They allowed him to live his life only focused on their needs and not his own. Granted Gregor is a grown man who chose to live this way. Kafka never explained why Gregor lived the life he lived. All the members in Gregor's family were capable of working. We know this because once Gregor was unable to provide for them, everyone including his little sister was able to get a job to help support the family. It was difficult to watch Gregor loose his family. Everyone eventually gave up on him. I do believe Gregor's mother had a hard time accepting what Gregor had become, which to me is the same as giving up on him. One of the hardest parts in the story for me was when Gregor's father injured him by throwing fruit at him. His father hurt him with no remorse. Gregor had  finally decided to stand up for his self. He didn't want his sister and mother to clear his room, that was his space that he wanted to remain the same. It's somewhat  like returning form college and  your bedroom has become an  office or something. People tend to feel neglected or overlooked. Gregor did not purposely mean to cause his sister and mom any harm. He was trying to communicate to them the only way he knew how. Gregor was trying to express to them that I'm here, its still me your son, and your brother. It seemed like Gregor's father was waiting for the opportunity to hurt or get rid of him. "he yelled "ah!" in a tone that suggested he was both furious and happy at the same time." Gregor's Father was the worst, he never gave him a chance. I felt really bad for Gregor, it seemed like he lived for his family and once they gave up on him,  he had nothing to live for.  Powerful story.

  1. Excellent response, Kimberly. I think you're exactly right that this is a moving story. Too often people feel repulsed by it or alienated by its weirdness so that they don't realize how incredibly sad it is.
