I've actually heard a lot about the story "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka in my previous English 102 class, so I was pretty anxious to start it. I thought it was a great story mainly because it made me think of life in a different perspective. Not that it is possible for a human to wake up one day as a different form such as a bug or anything, but the fact that one day something can change about you and it can affect those that are around you in more ways than you think. In the story we saw that this happen to the main character Gregor, he woke up one day thinking his life was how he knew it and it turned out, he woke up as a different form of life; a huge hideous bug. I can't even fathom the idea of that happening to anyone, realistically speaking or not. A bug isn't capable of doing half the things humans are and it seemed that Gregor became useless and helpless of himself and everyone around him.
His family first reacted to his state very hesitantly. They didn't want to believe that he was transformed especially his father. His mother still treated him as her own and so did his sister, trying to make his surroundings more comfortable, moving things around so that he had more space and giving him food. But his father was the one that surprised me. In a way, I felt that if Gregor was a bug or not, his father would still be hard on him. I can see what Kafka was trying to portray here because of his own relationship with his father. It was kind of like he was trying to show the readers the neglect and overbearing qualities his own father obtained through this relationship that Gregor and his father had.
"The Metamorphosis" was a really sad story for me. I felt bad for Gregor in the way he became helpless and as much as he wanted to help, there was no way he could do anything substantial for his family. They had to learn to make a living without him providing for them and it seemed as though overtime, they forgot his existence. It was sad to me that they let him die alone and didn't even seem to care. I felt that there was no love for him in the end. Overall, this was a great story though.
