Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 204 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.

In the Penal Colony

What I found most interesting about this was the little Island way of "execution" normally when a person is executed it is because they killed someone or did a server crime that they have to be punished for. In the case of the penal colony a "solider" that was made it watch the governor while he slept. The condemned man was not told why he was being punished. He was not told that because he fell asleep in front of the governs door that he was being executed. The execution machine was not a normal execution machine that we would see today. Not only did this method of execution seem to be inhumane in all was it was not being used for the right purposes. He had is body engraved with his wrong doings to the point where he would bleed out so badly that he would die a slow and painful death. This story makes me wonder why would the newer governor let this still go on for such a pointless matter. I feel like if something was to go wrong and the governor needed aid that there would be other people in the area to help him. Over all I thought that the ending of the story is what had me most confused was when the explore was boarding the ship and the two men when chasing after him why did he not let them onto the boat with him. Was he scared that if they went with him to his land would they spread this horrible idea of execution to his land? Or did he just not want to be reasonable for them?

  1. The execution system in this story, does make me think about if this method of execution is humane. I believe that it isn't a humane way of executing someone, because at first the person doesn't know what crime they have committed until during the execution. I believe that the execution system is too painful in the fact that it skewers the person after 12 hours of them bleeding out. The skewering kind of reminds of the "Mortal Kombat" series and the fatalities in it. This execution method is a very painful method to die.
