Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 204 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.

THE COUNTRY DOCTOR
"The Country Doctor" was an unpleasant story. I can't understand how everything could go wrong in a story, especially a fiction one. Granted there was the part when the country doctor miraculously received not one but two horses for the exchange of his maid. It disturbed me to think a doctor, who lives to help others would allow someone to harm another human being. The doctor was well aware of the strange mans intentions with his maid. How could the doctor run off to save someone he does not know in exchange to harm someone he does? Kafka did not give to much detail about the maid and the doctor's relationship, however we do know that the doctor's maid ran off to help him find a horse. shes not an enemy, why put her in harms way? after exchanging his maid for the horses the story seemed to become a nightmare that would never end. The doctor thought about saving his maid, especially when he realized that the patient wanted to die. Why not just say no to the strange man and find another way? doctors are respectable people to most. Kafka made the country doctor seem senseless...
