Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 204 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.

The Metamorphosis

The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka was my favorite story by far. Unlike the other short stories, it immediately starts of with a dramatic intro stating that Gregor Sansa awoke as a bug. The story itself presents a nightmarish life for someone who is relied on to provide for his family and how his family deals with the aftermath of it. The person who develops the most is Gregor's sister Grete because at first, she seemed like a naive child who didn't know better and wasn't too useful. Then as the story progresses, it appears she cares for Gregor more than his father and mother do. The job Gregor once had is obviously at this point gone and he is left as an isolated and lonely person, possibly similar to how Kafka may have had issues with his father and family and ended up not being with them anymore. In all, the Metamorphosis ends dramtically with Gregor starving to death, just as how Kafka did, and I feel this story represents Kafka's life better than any other.
