The Penal Colony was my least favorite from Kafka. The story took awhile to get to the point, for me at least. There were strange and gruesome conditions for the people of the penal colony. Kafka was fixated with torture and suffering in this story. This idea comes from the condemned men who were unaware for the reasons for their death. Another form of slavery was shown in this story, people were unable to think for them selves. They had to follow with their eyes closed, the people were thoroughly controlled. Its possible that there was a time, where Kafka felt he could not express himself without being punished or maybe that's how the world seemed to him. The story was strange, you had a officer who faithfully lived by rules that his community no longer respected nor cared about. The Explorer who cared less about what was going on in the penal colony. Possibly because he felt that their ideas were followed by the people. It was always this way and would not change based on his opinion. The Explorer decided to keep his opinion to himself however, we knew what he was thinking. The turning point for me was when the officer strapped himself to the machine for death. the officer made me feel that he was very loyal to the previous governor and the way he ran the penal colony. The officer choose to die before any more changes occurred.
