Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 204 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.

The Country Doctor

"The Country Doctor", I felt was an unusual story. At first I thought that the doctor was a female, soon then found out that it was actually a male doctor. I liked that fact that he truly went out of his way to help his town people out even in the worst of conditions. What I did not care for was when his house maid found him a horse(s) for him to help a family in need he went off and left her to be raped by the man whom gave him the horses. Even though he had thoughts about her while his was helping the sick boy; and how wrong he was for leaving her, I think when that man gave the gesture that the maid was his for the trade he should have said no! He gave up a innocent life to try to save another life and the sick boy ended up dying in the end, leaving Rosa scared for life and being attacked by the horse man. What I also thought was a little unusual was the fact that the family of the boy that was sick had the doctor strip down and lay naked next to him. How was that going to help him or the doctor in anyway? Over all from begging to end, The Country Doctor was a diffrent story that I feel was much more difficult to understand compared to "The Judgement".

  1. Does the doctor seem to have any choices in the matter? Can he stay and defend Rosa? Can he refuse to get into bed w/ the sick boy? What does the story seem to say about freedom of choice?

  3. I would have to say that the way that the family was acting when the doctor showed up they seemed to be threatening his life, as his the boy was not helped they where going to kill him. I felt as if he did not have a choice in his freedom, or any choice in anything that happened that night. I also felt that the horses where showing through there noises that pain that Rosa was having when she was left with the man, the pain that the boys was having as he laid in the bed dying. And lastly the confusion, anxiety and emotions that where running through the doctors head.
