Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 204 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.

Carpenter's Gothic
I actually really enjoyed hearing the reading aloud in class today. I felt like our classmates did a good job of painting a picture of Liz, Paul and Billy. They made it seem like a play which looking at the text sometimes feels like. At first, I didn't really understand the relationships amongst these specific individuals. I knew certain characteristics about them but was a little confused on how they were linked. But as we read along, I started to put the pieces together. Liz, seemed like a very unstable type of woman. She was hesitant when it came to answering questions, shaky on how she answered and I actually felt bad for her. It was sort of like she was the peace maker just trying to keep the sanity amongst her brother and her husband. Paul, her husband and Billy her brother both had very strong demeanors which made it difficult for them to get along. I feel that both of them seemed to be a little hypocritical considering they both despised each other for things they were doing themselves; (Drinking) I'm very interested in getting further into the story, to see how everything plays out.

I agree with you Angela, when i too was reading the book it was confusing to read both part and understand the relationship with one another, but then how Gianna, myself and i believe Dominique (it it wasn't Dominique reading and i confused you with someone else i'm really sorry lol) read the play, i got the sense of how each character really felt in each scene, and its much easier to understand the play this... also i agree with you on the fact that Liz is hesitant, but i also feel that she's scared to answer or stick up for herself when it comes to her husband. When she speaks to him it seems like she "fears" him, and its kinda of "expected" that she would keep peace between her husband and brother, because then she wouldn't hear the end of it because she lives with her husband. right ?
ReplyDeleteEven though I was not present in class on wednesday, this description even helped me see Liz, Paul and Billy. I also experienced some of the same confusions. I agree with you on your comments about Liz. Liz is a character I see building throughout the story. I can't wait to hopefully see that unfold.
