Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 204 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.

One thing I dont understand about this book is the question of lack of empathy within the androids which I guess can be determined with how you define empathy. First of all, what makes the human so different than the androids in this book if they need and empathy box? And, according to my understanding, empathy is the ability to "feel." To feel bad, emotional, good, bad, sorry, sad, happy. To be able to empathize with someone to me is being able to understand what someone is saying and be able to put yourself in their shoes, feel what they feel. In this book, quite frankly, I feel as though the androids do these things for the most part. How is Pris "freightened" about the idea of the bounty hunters or how is Imgard and Baty "agitated" when confronted about the same topic? Why are they able to express happiness when they first see Pris? What is the point in Luba having a last wish? Doesnt all of these examples express or obtain the use of empathy in some form? Maybe my understanding is going wrong due to lack of understanding the fine line between empathy and emotions, if there is one.

I totally agree with you that it is confusing distinguishing the difference between the empathy of the replicants and the empathy of human beings. I guess as a human, we think that because we "feel" that's what makes us actual beings. But not a lot of people think about the feelings that other forms obtain such as animals. So I can totally agree with the confusion.
