Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 204 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.

Blade Runner

This is actually the second time that I've viewed this movie in college so far. In my previous English 102 class, we examined and basically held a debate on the perspectives of this movie and even the second time still has me a bit torn. The question of If Deckard is a replicant or not is so important and like you said in class, even the creators of the movie couldn't decide. In my opinion, I think Deckard is a replicant mainly because of the little subliminal messages like, his tainted memories and even the fact that he was so infatuated with Rachel knowing she was a replicant as well. I thought the scene where Deckard was almost thrown off a building but saved was very strong. Being that close to death is what the replicants felt like, living in fear all their lives and that's exactly what they wanted to show him. Overall, I like Blade Runner. To this day, every time I watch it I examine a different viewpoint on what's real and what's not.

  1. I also enjoyed the movie more the second time because I noticed a lot more things in the movie this time than when I watched it the first time because of the book. One of the big questions I had with the movie was who was the woman in the pictures on Rick's piano, was it Iran, and was Rick a widower? I also think that Roy saved Rick because Roy knew that he was going to die, but he wanted to do something good before he died. I also believe that Rick might be an android because of the unicorn dream and the origami, was something that stood out to me. Another thing to note is that Blade Runner 2 is supposedly happening in 2017, so these questions might be answered.

  2. I'm glad you brought up the detail of the photos on Rick's piano. Photos have a huge thematic value in this film, don't they? In addition to these, you have the photo Rachel has of "herself" and her grandmother and also the photos that Leon goes back to the hideout for, presumably photos that have nothing to do w/ his own "life." What is the significance of photos in the movie, and do the photos on the piano change their significance if Rick is a replicant or not?
