Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 204 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? PART 2
After finishing the book, I was upset by the ending…I thought that it was going to be a lot better then it was. I think what bothered me the most was two things, that Rachael killed Ricks goat for no reason and that Buster said that Wilbur Mercer did not exist and that their whole "religion" was based on a big lie. That it was all made up and Mercer was a regular man that just was acting in short films. What I also did not get was in the end when Rick found the toad, why did the wife make such a big deal about making sure this "electric" toad was so well taken care of and that it had all the things that a normal toad would have. In then end I feel like there where so many unanswered questions that are never really answered. But over all I found that book to be really interesting and kept me wanting to read more.

Alexa: Good entry. Let me turn one of your questions back at you. It does seem that Mercerism is a big hoax. Yet how do you explain that Mercer has been appearing to Rick when he's not merged with the empathy box?
ReplyDeleteI would think its all in his head, he truly wants to think that Mercer is real and that this "religion" does exist, Because of what everyone is telling him its been pounded into his head. But I think over all it such a big deal for him to think that Mercer is real that he is suffering from some kind of delusion. But this also might be because he had not been sleeping for like three days and all of the stress he is going through because he wants a real animal so badly. And on top of that all of his mixed feelings that he has for Rachael Rosen.
